Sales, Debt Recovery & Customer Relations for Ugandan Businesses

Tips on attracting customers, managing credit sales, recovering debts, and handling customer complaints for shops in Uganda.

Managing Credit Sales and Debt Recovery

To politely refuse credit (*ebibanja*), display clear signage like "No Credit Sales / *Tubatunda mu Cash*", explain cash-flow rules, and offer small discounts for immediate payments. Avoid mixing business cash flow with personal relationships when selling on credit to friends/family; if granted, enforce written payment deadlines and cap limits. To legally recover money from bad debtors, issue a formal demand letter, then file a claim through the Small Claims Procedure Court for debts up to UGX 10,000,000.

Attracting and Retaining Customers

Attract more customers by offering competitive pricing, maintaining clean and well-lit displays, building strong customer rapport, running WhatsApp status promotions, and offering loyalty discounts. To keep shops busy during dry seasons (Jan/Feb), run back-to-school bundles, clearance sales, expand into daily essentials, and reduce non-essential overheads. Profitable items in a general merchandise shop include beverages, cosmetics, phone accessories, baby products, personal hygiene items, and fast-moving dry foodstuffs. Compete with new shops by focusing on superior customer service, speed, product authenticity, loyalty perks, and niche items.

Handling Customer Feedback and Competition

When customers complain about high prices, explain product quality/reliability, demonstrate benefits, and offer alternative price points without compromising profit margins. When a customer aggressively demands a refund, remain calm, inspect the item against your store's refund/exchange policy, and offer replacement or store credit where cash refunds are unfeasible.

Building Trust with Corporate Customers

Build trust with regular corporate customers by providing accurate tax invoices/EFRIS receipts, maintaining consistent quality, respecting delivery timelines, and offering 14-to-30-day corporate credit terms backed by official LPOs.
