Capital, Loans & Mobile Money Security for Uganda Businesses

A guide to business loans, mobile money operations, and capital raising strategies for Ugandan entrepreneurs and shop owners.

Accessing Business Loans in Uganda

Collateral-free digital micro-loans are accessible via mobile money channels (e.g., MTN Mokash, Airtel Wewole) or fintech platforms based on transaction history. For small businesses, Centenary Bank, Equity Bank, and PostBank offer tailored SME financing. To qualify for a Centenary Bank loan, you'll need 6 months of bank/mobile money statements, a valid trading license, National ID, proof of business location, and acceptable collateral. Many banks now use mobile money transaction history to assess cash flow. Microfinance loans offer quicker approval but generally have higher interest rates (24%-36%) compared to commercial banks (18%-24%). Government initiatives like Emyooga and Parish Development Model (PDM) provide low-interest capital to SACCOs and enterprise groups; for PDM, market vendors must belong to a registered Parish Enterprise Group. Defaulting on loans from legally operating moneylenders can lead to collateral attachment, though illegal interest rates can be challenged.

Setting Up and Managing Mobile Money Operations

To register for MTN MoMoPay for your shop, visit an MTN service center or register online with your National ID, business name/TIN, mobile number, and bank details. Airtel Money Pay charges tiered commission fees from 0% to 1% on incoming payments. Starting a mobile money agency business requires a registered entity, a physical location, UGX 2,000,000-5,000,000 float capital, and telecom approval. Commissions for agents are based on transactional volume tiers.

Protecting Your Mobile Money Business

To protect your mobile money business from fraudsters, never enter your agent PIN in front of customers. Always manually verify wallet balance updates via shortcodes (`*165#` or `*185#`) and ignore verbal requests to reverse money.

Raising Capital for Expansion

To expand your retail shop, consider combining reinvested profits, trade credit from suppliers, SACCO savings, and peer-to-peer investment before taking on high-interest commercial bank debt. Joining a reliable SACCO registered with UMRA, buying shares, and maintaining savings can lead to loan eligibility.
